Valtellina Pezzotti

Valtellina Pezzotti

"Pezzotto" is perhaps the most famous craft product in Valtellina. It is a very resistant carpet made using lengths, or rolls (in Italian "pezze") of material, warped by hand loom.

The "Pezzotto" was originally a rough and strong carpet made through the warping of tough hemp and lengths of worn-out patches and old rags. It was used to cover hay, shelter cattle from the cold of mountain pastures, or, in the summer, to lay out the wheat in farmyards.

Today old rags have been replaced by lengths of cotton or silk, and the choice of colours and patterns is even more varied. The strong and rough cloth of the rural tradition has now become a decorative modern furnishing, known far and wide.
